Our New Deal Festival programs often reflect the artwork and design of the 1930s. This year’s design included the famous blue eagle symbol of the National Recovery Administration (NRA). This poster would have been displayed in businesses that supported the NRA’s “Code of Fair Competition.”

One of President Roosevelt’s “alphabet soup” New Deal agencies, the NRA was established in 1933 by the National Industrial Recovery Act in 1933 (NIRA) to “supervise fair trade codes and guaranteed laborers a right to collective bargaining.” The NIRA received intense criticism at the time and its compulsory codes were invalidated in 1935 by the US Supreme Court.
