Arthurdale High School

Education was very important in the Arthurdale community. From 1934 - 1936, Arthurdale was the site of a very innovative experiment in progressive education. Elsie Ripley Clapp, a student of John Dewey, served as Director of Community Affairs and School Administrator during that time. She used the school system as a way to build a sense of community among the homesteaders.

From 1936 on, the Arthurdale schools were under the control of the Preston County Board of Education.

Each year, Eleanor Roosevelt would visit Arthurdale to give out the diplomas to the graduating class. Additionally, in May 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Arthurdale to give the commencement speech.
